The Pantheon is on display in the first floor library of Cupples House. The
Impressionistic scene shows a Parisian street scene with numerous figures, autos, and buildings
with glowing windows all set against a cloudy gray sky.
Cortès was born in Lagny, France on April 26, 1882. Around 1900 he began to paint scenes of
Paris streets, and it would be works such as these for which he would be best known. Cortès
employs an Impressionistic technique in his paintings as seen through the outdoor settings and
his usage of contrasting colors. He continued to paint Parisian scenes until his death in 1969.
