Femme en Kimono (No. 194) is on display in a second floor bedroom of Cupples House. The
painting shows a portrait of a woman wearing a floral kimono. It appears that Femme en Kimono
(No. 194) is an unfinished work; there are visible pencil lines and exposed canvas most of the
development in the portrait surrounds the woman’s head.
Natalia Gontcharova was a founder of the Rayonist Movement with Mikhail Larianov. The
Rayonist Movement strove for two dimensional representation of reflected light. In 1915 she
relocated to Paris to design theatre sets and costumes. Other works by Gontcharova can be
viewed in other institutions such as the Guggenheim, the Art Institute of Chicago, MoMA-NYC,
and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
