Competition for Stroble Awards in the Health Sciences
The Division of Research Administration through the Office of the
Vice President for Research announces the 2014 competition for the
Stroble Awards in the Health Sciences. The deadline for submission is
February 17, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Central Time. Guidelines and the
application package are available on the web at
The Stroble Awards are funded by an endowment from Mr. and Mrs. Francis
A. Stroble and are intended to support research, other than Medical School
Research, in the broad area of health sciences. Two awards will be made
with support up to $10,000 each.
Eligible applicants include all full-time faculty in schools and colleges at
the University, with the exception of the Medical School. Please see the
guidelines and application package for complete details.

Students Work Accepted at the NCUR 2014 Conference
Two SLU students had their work accepted at the NCUR 2014 Conference
in Lexington, KY, in April: Sarah Nash (A&S, Sociology) - "A Perfect Storm:
The Hope VI Program and the Atlanta 1996 Summer Olympics"
Laura de Socarraz-Novoa (A&S, Art History) - "Joaquin Torres-Garcia:
Going beyond the Grid" The notice of their acceptance reads, in part:
"Chosen from more than 4,000 submissions, your abstract demonstrates
a unique contribution to your field of study and we are pleased to offer
you the opportunity to present your work to your peers, faculty, and
staff from around the world."

Competition for Beaumont Faculty Development Fund and Summer
Research Award Programs
Applications are now available for two internal grant programs designed
to support faculty research and scholarly activity. The deadline for both
the Beaumont Faculty Development Fund and the Summer Research
Award in the Humanities is 5 p.m., Monday, February 17, 2014.
The objectives of both programs are:
- to support pilot research and concept development prior to
the submission of proposals to external funding sources;
- to assist faculty in developing skills and competencies to
pursue research and external support; and
- to support faculty in the pursuit of scholarly activity,
including course and curriculum development.
The Beaumont Faculty Development Fund (BFDF) was established at
Saint Louis University in 1976 with initial endowed support from the
Beaumont Foundation. Grants of up to $5,000 are available for year-long
projects. Funds can be used to support the purchase of research supplies,
minor equipment, and student labor, and travel to collections, all of which
must be directly related to the project and not considered a normal
The Summer Research Award in the Humanities is designated for projects
that fall broadly into the realm of the humanities, and can be completed
between July 1 and September 30. In addition to the above, the SRA provides
a stipend and fringe benefits for the investigator. Support is also available for
a graduate student stipend of $1,000 and three credits of graduate tuition to be
used during the summer session only.

Nominations Now Accepted for 2014 Atlas Program "Coffee and Conversation" Events:
The Atlas Program Planning Committee is pleased to announce its call for nominations for its
first series of "Atlas Coffee and Conversation" events. Who would you like to sit down with
and learn more about their global initiatives? Is there a professor you would like to sit down
with and learn more about his or her international research and/or service activities? Is there
a fellow student you would like to have share their global experiences and how they are
working to make a difference in the world? Who emulates SLU's conception of "global

speak during the Fourteenth Annual Atlas Program to be held March 31 - April 5, 2013. As
the "Coffee and Conversation" events are designed to provide an informal, small group setting,
spaces will be limited at these events and an R.S.V.P. will be required. Information on how to
attend these events will be provided in February of 2014.
Faculty Invited to Submit Applications for Innovative Teaching Fellowships
This year, all applicants will be required to take part in a Pre-Application
Workshop and a Pre-Submission Instructional Design Consultation.
The Reinert Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning announces
the next call for applications to teach in the Learning Studio, an experimental,
technology-rich classroom located in Des Peres Hall. Applications are due
Friday, Feb. 21, 2014. For a comprehensive overview of the Innovative Teaching
Fellowship program, the revised application process and updated application
forms, visit the Reinert Center website.
Applicants are required to attend a Pre-Application Workshop, held during the
week of Jan. 27-31, 2014, and sign-up for a required Pre-Submission Instructional
Design Consultation, held during the week of Feb. 10-14, before interested faculty
members' applications will be considered complete.
Registration is required to attend a Pre-Application Workshop. Interested faculty
should register for one of the following sessions online by 5 p.m. on Friday,

The Learning Studio is a state-of-the-art teaching space designed by a team of Saint
Louis University faculty and students as part of the Herman Miller Learning
Spaces Research Project. The Learning Studio provides flexible furniture combined
with a range of innovative features and technologies, and seats up to 25 students
at a time. By leveraging the instructional design assistance provided by Reinert Center
staff and the unique features and technologies in the room, full-time faculty teaching in
the space will have a chance to experiment with innovative teaching strategies to create
engaging and interactive learning experiences.
Current, full-time, permanent SLU teaching faculty interested in developing instructional
approaches that effectively optimize the use of the Learning Studio's features and
technologies are invited to apply for the Innovative Teaching Fellowship.
The Fellowship includes funding for a one-semester, one-course reduction in teaching
load to allow the recipient time to redesign an existing course or to design a new
course to be taught in the Learning Studio in the semester immediately following the
course release. For this call, the course-release semester would take place in the fall
2014 and fellows would teach in the Learning Studio during the spring 2015 semester.
Priority consideration will be given to applications that:
- Include creative ideas for maximizing the use of the Learning Studio space and
technologies to support student learning;
- Contain a method for assessing the impact of the proposed (re)designed course;
- Identify ways to serve as an instructional model for use by other SLU faculty; and
- Identify possible ways to contribute to the research on teaching in innovative,

The annual 200 Show presented by the Department of Fine and Performing Arts - Studio Art will open
Friday, December 6th, with an opening reception from 4:30 to 6:30pm, and continue through February
The 200 Show is an exhibit of student work created in the 200-level Studio Art classes. This includes
beginning classes in drawing, painting, printmaking, design, graphic design, color theory, photography,
ceramics, 3D design, metalsmithing, fibers, and computer art. Please come see the work of these
students and get a sense of the range of imagery and processes that students work with in these studio
The show is presented at McNamee Gallery in the lower level of Cupples House, 3673 West Pine Mall.
Come enjoy the reception and have a chance to speak with some of the student artists. It is free and all
are welcome. Gallery hours are Wednesday - Friday, 12pm-4pm, Saturday, 1pm - 4pm. The gallery is
closed December 18 - January 14.

2014 Sam and Marilyn Fox Atlas Week Program
Education: Igniting the Flames of Change
March 31 - April 4, 2014
The Fourteenth Annual Sam and Marilyn Fox Atlas Week program will
be held the week of March 31st - April 4th, 2014. One of the main goals
of the Atlas Program is to increase awareness of the global issues
that confront us today in an effort not only to promote discussion,
but also to inspire and inform action. It focuses on what we as global
citizens can do to contribute to a better life for all people now and in the
future. The Atlas Program is unique in that for one week of the year, it
brings together members of the University community to focus on the
global challenges that confront us in the 21st century.
The theme for the 2014 Atlas Program is "Education: Igniting the Flames
of Change". The Atlas Planning Committee is pleased to announce that
Shabana Basij-Rasikh will deliver the keynote address at the Atlas Week
Signature Symposium on Thursday, April 3 at 5:30 p.m. in the Wool Ballrooms
of the Busch Student Center. She will be visiting SLU for two days (April 2nd
and 3rd) to share her advocacy efforts and her inside views on Afghanistan.

The SLU Prison Program transitions to College of Arts and Sciences:
In November 2013 the Saint Louis University Prison Program transitioned
from the School for Professional Studies (SPS) to the College of Arts and
Sciences. The Prison Program began as an initiative within the Department
of Theological Studies in 2007, and has become a work embraced by a
number of departments and programs on the Frost and Medical campuses.
The program was overseen by SPS from August 2010 to October 2013. It
now includes an associate of arts degree, an arts and education program
that delivers special events and workshops, and reentry programming that
assists the Department of Corrections in preparing men for release from
prison. The work is focused on the Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and
Correctional Center (ERDCC) in Bonne Terre, Missouri. Kenneth Parker,
director of the program stated, "We are delighted to return to the oversight
of the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and grateful for the
collaboration with former SPS dean, Jennifer Giancola, during the initial
implementation of the associate of arts degree. Her leadership was key to
the early success of this work." Dean Barber has expressed strong support
for the Prison Program, which reflects the Catholic Jesuit mission of Saint Louis
The SLU Prison Program has been sustained by grants and gifts totaling over
$500,000 to date, and has built a strong collaborative relationship with the
Missouri Department of Corrections. Networks of cooperative engagement also
exist with Saint Louis City, the Federal Probation Office in Saint Louis, and other
government and non-profit organizations. In April 2013, the program hosted the
Third Annual National Conference on Higher Education in Prisons. Mentoring of
emerging programs at Washington University and Greenville College, and
advocacy for the creation of programs at Boston College, College of the Holy
Cross, and Loyola University of Chicago, mark the SLU Prison Program as a
national leader in the movement to bring higher education to prisons.
During Kenneth Parker's sabbatical in spring 2014, Dr. Karen Barney, Professor
Emerita and recently retired chair of the Department of Occupational Science &
Occupational Therapy, will serve as Acting Director of the SLU Prison Program.
Dean Barber observed, "Professor Barney brings a wealth of professional and
administrative experience to this role, and has a vision for collaboration between
SLU's professional schools, colleges, and departments that will expand the
internal university network engaged in this vital work with the Missouri Department
of Corrections." Parker will return to this administrative role at the conclusion of his

This article was recently published with Judith L. Gibbons, Ph.D. as
second author. The research was done during her Fulbright in
Barrett, A. N., Gibbons, J. L., & Peláez Ponce, A. V. (2014). "Now
I can help someone": Social remittances among returned migrants in
highland Guatemala. International Perspectives in Psychology: Research,
Practice, Consultation, 3(1), 1-18.
They found that returned migrants to Guatemala expressed new ideas
about citizenship, labor relations, poverty, gender attitudes, and education.
Those new ideas may provide opportunities for socio-political development.
