The University Honors Program
REQUIREMENTS FOR CONSIDERATION:
Incoming freshmen must present a composite ACT score of at least 30 or a combined SAT score of at least 1330 and a high school GPA of 3.8 or better to be considered for the Honors Program.
The University Honors Program offers eligible students the opportunity to develop an individual course of study that complements their undergraduate major, leads to an Honors distinction on their transcript. To complement the academic program, the University Honors Program offers vibrant community features, including the Honors Student Association, the Honors Learning Community and First-Year Interest Groups (FIGs).
The University Honors Program provides secondary advising through Honors advisors who work with primary advisors and faculty mentors from other programs and academic departments to provide support for Honors students throughout their undergraduate careers. Honors students also receive priority registration, allowing them to register for courses prior to the standard registration period.
By providing Honors sections of many core courses, innovative upper-level seminars and the opportunity to earn Honors credit in a variety of ways - contract options, independent study or research, internships and study abroad - the University Honors Program offers students special opportunities and challenges, creating and intensifying the intellectual and cultural experience of their undergraduate education.
Students who complete the University Honors Program earn a University Honors Program distinction on their transcript; this is a distinction beyond the traditional awards of summa cum laude, magna cum laude and cum laude. Most Honors graduates go on to study in professional schools or graduate programs in their disciplines. Every year, a number of Honors students successfully compete for post-graduate scholarships and fellowships such as the Truman, Marshall, and Rhodes Scholarships and the Fulbright Fellowships. Several Honors students have continued their studies on Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarships.
APPLYING TO THE PROGRAM:
Students who meet the minimum requirements for consideration and who have submitted their application for freshman admission must apply separately for the University Honors Program via the online application. Completed applications for both Freshman Admission and the University Honors Program should be submitted by Dec. 1.
This is the essay question that must be completed: SLU Honors students develop their ability to ask and answer questions effectively through rigorous coursework. As a Jesuit Honors Program, we also provide opportunities for critical reflection and personal exploration. With this in mind, identify a question that you would like to answer for or about yourself by the end of your college career. Why is that particular question important to you?
Students are expected to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 throughout their course of study in order to remain in good standing in the University Honors Program. If a student's cumulative GPA drops below 3.5, the student will be notified of probationary status in the program and will be expected to improve his or her GPA at the end of the probationary semester.
