Minor in Urban Poverty Studies

Offered by the Saint Louis University College of Arts and Sciences

  • Minor in Urban Poverty Studies

Overview: Micah House is a faith-based program that brings together students in a wide variety of majors to seek long-term solutions to the problems of the urban poor. As a community of students committed to action as well as to study, students explore the challenges facing America’s inner cities and put what they learn to the test in model service projects in St. Louis. Students of all faiths are welcome.

Curriculum: SLU's minor in urban poverty studies involves 18 hours of coursework.Incoming freshmen from around the country are admitted in May of their senior year in high school. They live on a special floor of Marguerite Hall, gathering as a community once a week and taking four of their normal core courses in special sections centered on questions of peace and justice. They serve the poor in the Historic Shaw Neighborhood, near campus.

Careers in the Field: The program enrolls students in more than 25 majors, including areas as diverse as psychology, pre-med, engineering, and communication. Participants come from all races, regions, denominations and backgrounds. Since friendships in the program are close and the service is rewarding, most students who join Micah House remain involved throughout their college careers.

About the Faculty:  Courses in the urban poverty studies minor are taught by experts in such fields as American Studies, African-American Studies, English, Public Policy Studies, Sociology and Social Work.

Internship Opportunities: Since the aim of Micah House is to address urban problems effectively through careful study and committed service, student research is very important. Samples of student projects are available at
