About the Saint Louis University Vice President for Research Search

Reporting to the Saint Louis University Provost, the Vice President for Research (VPR) is a member of the President's Coordinating Council and works closely with the academic deans, department chairs and faculty to advance the quality, scope and impact of their research and graduate programs by fostering excellence in research and scholarship.

The VPR will provide recommendations and review of research policies and assist in their development; will ensure compliance with federal guidelines governing research; will support compliance with internal university structures that encompass diverse perspectives in an environment of shared governance; will facilitate multi-disciplinary collaboration in research and graduate education that will serve students' interests while building upon faculty strengths; and will work with the innovation and technology sector to promote licensing and new business opportunities for SLU researchers.

The Vice President is also responsible for representing the scholarly activities and accomplishments of the University's faculty to external agencies, private foundations, and industry partners at the local, regional and national levels. The Vice President will provide leadership for overseeing and strengthening research doctoral degrees to assure an unremitting focus on academic excellence.

Several administrative units report directly to the Vice President and include the Office of Research Development and Services, the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration, the Office of Environmental Health & Safety, the Office of Technology Management in Research, the Office of Research Integrity, the Research Technology Group, the Grants Development Office, and the Clinical Trials Office.

Additionally, related functions including the Institutional Review Board, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, the Responsible Conduct of Research function, and the Conflict of Interest in Research function fall under the purview of the Vice President.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a record of scholarly excellence, including experience in supervising doctoral student research. She or he will also have an excellent record of achievement in administration at a research-intensive university as well as experience expanding a university's research capacity. She or he will have the ability to support and develop scholarship efforts in the arts and humanities as well as a track record in building interdisciplinary and multi-specialty collaborations across the university.

The VPR  will have a broad knowledge of traditional funding sources as well as experience in developing and maintaining partnerships with foundations and industry. Experience working at a university with a medical school is strongly preferred as is experience with technology transfer; a doctorate is required.
