  1. Download template_slu.zip file to your desktop. This file is a zipped file that contains the basic elements for your site.

  2.
  3. Once downloaded, extract the file to your desktop by double clicking on it. After extracted, a folder called "template_slu" will appear on your desktop.

  4.
  5. Re-name the folder to the name of your site. It is strongly advised that the name of the local folder is the same name as the live folder on the Web server (example, if your Web address is www.slu.edu/colleges/parks/, name your local folder "parks". When renaming the file, use all lowercase letters and do not use spaces between any characters or underscores in your folder name.

  6.
  7. There will be a "template_slu.html" file in your site folder.

  8.
  9. There will be an "images" folder in your main site folder.

  10.
  11. There will be a file called "space.gif" within the images directory. It's part of the University template. Do not delete it.

  12.
  13. You are now ready to begin editing the template.

  14.
  15. Open Dreamweaver or other HTML editor.

  16.
  17. Go to File > Open > and navigate to your folder [on your desktop]. Open "template_slu.html" that is inside the renamed folder.

  18.
  19. Once the file is opened, go to File > Save As > and rename "template_slu.html" to "index.html". Be sure to save the "index.html" folder into the renamed folder. The "index.html" page will be your homepage. Do not name this page "home" or anything other than index.html. All web browsers search for this file first when a directory is requested.

  20.
  21. Be sure that Dreamweaver is in the "Design and Code" view (check the view menu at the top of the program).

  22.
  23. There are three sections of the HTML document that can be edited. All of the sections are labeled within the HTML code of the document. The areas include:
    • Title - the name of the page
    • Left-column navigation - navigation through your Web section
    • Main content:
      • Service department name
      • Page headline
      • Body text
      • Right-column navigation for a page's sub-content (optional)
