Smoking FAQs

Below are some frequently asked questions about smoking.  If you have a question you'd like to see addressed please email at

Will a smoke-free campus put smokers at risk?
DPS has stated the they believe SLU's parking lots and perimeter are safe, and increased traffic to these areas could make them safer.

Is there really a significant risk of secondhand smoke exposure outside?
Yes. The Surgeon General has stated that there is no risk-free level of secondhand smoke. Other studies have shown significant evidence that outdoor smoke is harmful.

Wouldn't enforcement of the current policy be sufficient to reduce secondhand smoke exposure?
We have tried to ask the University to enforce its smoking policy of 20-feet outside of doors, but moving the ashtrays cannot solve the problem. The current policy is not followed nor enforced.
