Saint Louis University

The Women's and Gender Studies Department offers a 30 credit hour undergraduate major, an 18 credit hour undergraduate minor program, a 30 credit hour M.A., an accelerated B.A./M.A. program for undergraduates at Saint Louis University and a 9 credit hour graduate minor program.

Major: Requirements for a Women's and Gender Studies Major include 15 credit hours of required courses (3 credit Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies, 3 credit Feminism in Action, 3 credit Feminist Theory, 3 credit Methods, and 3 credit Capstone). The remaining 15 credit hours can be drawn from a variety of cross-listed courses. Often these courses fulfill simultaneously requirements for the university's core curriculum and the Women's and Gender Studies major or minor.

Minor: Requirements for a Women's and Gender Studies Minor include the 3 credit hour Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies course and a choice of one of the following 3 credit hour courses: Feminism in Action, Feminist Theory, Methods, or Capstone; the remaining 12 credit hours can be drawn from a variety of cross-listed courses. Often these courses fulfill simultaneously requirements for the university's core curriculum and the Women's and Gender Studies major or minor.

M.A.: Requirements for a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Women's and Gender Studies include 30 credit hours. Graduate work is designed to develop: 1) students' ability to engage critically with multicultural feminist theories concerning social inequalities, 2) strong research and writing skills, and 3) knowledge and skills that enable communication with diverse audiences, coalition building for social action, and development of initiatives for change. Each student works out a curriculum plan for their area of specialization and a capstone project in consultation with the Director of Graduate Studies.

For the accelerated B.A./M.A. program for undergraduates at Saint Louis University, students take six credit hours (two graduate classes) in their senior year that count for both the B.A. and M.A. requirements.

Graduate Minor: The Graduate Minor requires 9 credit hours. This includes Feminist Theory (3 credits) and Feminist Epistemologies (3 credits) along with one other cross-listed course.
