What does SLU Women's and Gender Studies offer for degrees?

The Women's and Gender Studies Department at Saint Louis University offers a 30 credit hour undergraduate major, an 18 credit hour undergraduate minor program, a 30 credit hour M.A., an accelerated B.A./M.A. program for undergraduates at Saint Louis University and a 9 credit hour graduate minor program.

Major: Requirements for a Women's and Gender Studies Major include 15 credit hour required courses (3 credit Women's and Gender Studies Introduction course, 3 credit Feminism in Action course, 3 credit Feminist Theory course, 3 credit Methods course, and 3 credit Capstone course). The remaining 15 credit hours can be drawn from a variety of Women's and Gender Studies courses that are cross-listed. Often these courses can fulfill core requirements and/or major requirements as well as the requirements for the minor.   

Minor: Requirements for a Women's and Gender Studies Minor include a 3 credit hour Women's and Gender Studies Introduction course and a choice of one of the following 3 credit hour courses: Feminism in Action, Feminist Theory, Methods, or Capstone; the remaining 12 credit hours can be drawn from a variety of Women's and Gender Studies courses that are cross-listed. Often these courses can fulfill core requirements and/or major requirements as well as the requirements for the minor.

M.A.: Requirements for a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Women's and Gender Studies include 30 credit hour. Graduate work is designed to develop: 1) students' ability to engage critically with multicultural feminist theories concerning social inequalities; 2) strong research and writing skills; and 3) knowledge and skills that enable communication with diverse audiences, coalition building for social action, and development of initiatives for change. Each student works out a curriculum plan for his or her area of specialization and a capstone project in consultation with the Director of Graduate Studies.

There is an accelerated B.A./M.A. program for undergraduates at Saint Louis University. Students who enter the accelerated B.A./M.A. program take six credit hours (two graduate classes) in their senior year that count for both the B.A. and M.A. requirements.

Graduate Minor: The Graduate Minor requires 9 credit hours. This includes the required courses Feminist Theory (3 credits) and Feminist Epistemologies (3 credits), along with one other cross-listed Women's and Gender Studies course.
