M.S. Nutrition and Dietetics with an emphasis in Nutrition and Physical Performance
Wellness and disease prevention are areas of great interest to the American public. The Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics with emphasis in Nutrition and Physical Performance prepares students in a multidisciplinary approach to prevention, utilizing nutrition and exercise intervention strategies for lifestyle change. The program is designed for professionals who have a baccalaureate degree in an allied health field. Course work focuses on nutrition, health promotion, prevention, physiology and cardiovascular fitness. Graduates are encouraged to seek ACSM Health Fitness Instructor Certification, as well as NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist credentials. Graduates are prepared for positions in:
- Corporate and worksite wellness programs
- Cardiac fitness and rehabilitation facilities
- Private practice in sports and nutrition
Upon completion of the program, the graduate will:
- Exhibit the professional competencies of a clinical specialist in sports and cardiovascular nutrition, as specified by the American Dietetic Association
- Use appropriate techniques to assess health behaviors and lifestyle characteristics of individuals and groups
- Systematically develop programs incorporating physical fitness and nutrition principles, including appropriate needs for all phases of the life cycle
- Demonstrate an ability to apply educational principles to develop both group and individual nutrition and physical fitness programs
- Use nutritional, physical fitness and education principles to develop and implement research projects in nutrition and physical performance.
The length of the program is 30 semester hours, depending on individual variations in education and experience. Study in the Nutrition and Physical Performance program fosters close ties with faculty with individual attention on research projects and publications. Students may pursue either full-time or part-time study. Most classes are offered late afternoon or evening permitting employment flexibility.
If you are a registered dietitian, you can apply these courses toward your continuing education requirements. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics grants 45 Continuing Education hours for each three-credit-hour semester course.
