M.S. Nutrition and Dietetics with an emphasis in Medical Dietetics
Do you have a baccalaureate degree in dietetics, nutrition, or a related area? Are you interested in becoming a specialist in the area on nutrition? If so, you may wish to consider our Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics with emphasis in Medical Dietetics. The program is designed for professionals who have a baccalaureate degree in an allied health field. Coursework focuses in the areas of education, administration, and counseling as they apply to nutrition care. We strive to not only meet the professional development needs of our students, but to also provide enough flexibility to prepare graduates for a variety of positions. A key program goal is to meet the professional development needs of our students with sufficient flexibility to prepare graduates for positions as:
- Clinical dietetic managers
- Educators of dietetic practitioners
- Community nutrition practitioners and administrators
- Cardiovascular rehabilitation nutritionists
- Clinical specialists (pediatric, TEN/TPN, gerontology).
Upon completion, the graduate will:
- Exhibit the professional competencies of a clinical specialist as identified by the American Dietetic Association
- Apply scientific principles in relation to nutritional needs and processes in health and disease throughout the life cycle
- Demonstrate an ability to function effectively within a variety of health organization systems
- Utilize, manage, and evaluate resources effectively
- Apply educational principles in the development of group and individual nutritional programs
- Demonstrate an inquisitive ability through the development of investigative skills.
The length of the program is 31 semester hours. Students receive a broad and varied exposure both in classroom and clinical settings in a multidisciplinary environment. The program provides individual attention and close ties with faculty as part of the research and publication components. Students may pursue either full-time or part-time study. Most classes are offered late afternoon or evening hours permitting employment flexibility.
If you are a registered dietitian, you can apply these courses toward your continuing education requirements. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics grants 45 Continuing Education hours for each three-credit-hour semester course.
