Saint Louis University English Degree Overview
Saint Louis University's English curriculum is student-centered. Classes are small, to emphasize discussion, and students work closely with faculty members on independent research topics. Coursework balances tradition and innovation in all areas of literary and rhetorical studies, including:
- British and American literatures
- Postcolonial literature
- Literary theory
- Film studies
- Gender and race studies
- History of the English language
- Rhetoric and composition
- Creative writing
If you choose to major in English at SLU, you'll be able to pursue a track of study that interests you, including creative writing, rhetoric, writing and technology, or research. In addition to a B.A. in English, SLU also has minors in English and creative writing, as well as a certificate in creative and professional writing that is offered in conjunction with the University's communications department.
What You'll Learn in SLU's English Program
In addition to established courses that will introduce you to major literary periods and authors, SLU's English department offers advanced students specialized courses within the discipline of literary studies.
All courses ask students to write a significant amount of formal and informal critical analysis. Along with courses in literature, in which writing plays a principal role, you may also take courses in various genres of creative writing and/or business and professional writing.
What Can You Do With a Degree in English from SLU?
A degree in English from SLU gives you a solid foundation for any profession that requires excellent analytical and communication skills. Graduates from SLU's English program are employed in business, education, government, and at nonprofit agencies. Some students choose to pursue service upon graduation through organizations such as the Jesuit Volunteer Corps or the Peace Corps.
Many graduates from this program have also chosen to attend law school, medical school or enroll in M.B.A. programs. Others pursue careers in secondary education, the media or publishing.
