Concepts & Theories of Leadership (OSTD 410)
Course Description: This course promotes leadership development through the study of leadership theory and concepts and encourages the practical application of leadership at all levels. It includes analysis of historical approaches to leadership and focuses on influential contemporary leadership perspectives such as Servant Leadership, Situational Leadership, Transformational Leadership, and Team Leadership. Learning is enhanced through self-assessments, experiential exercises, and a leadership development source book.Course Goals: This course extends the content of previous coursework on communication, human behavior, and work management by providing in-depth exposure to the leadership skills needed to succeed in professional settings. The course is designed to develop student knowledge and skills of leadership theory and practice and to make applications at the individual, group, and organizational levels. Students also have the opportunity to apply course content and improve their own leadership skills through the completion of a leadership development plan. Upon completion of this course, students will be better prepared to take on leadership roles in organizations.
Organizational Foundations (OSTD 300)
Course Description: This course is an introduction to the Organizational Studies Major. This course covers theory and practice within organizational management and organizational behavior at the individual, interpersonal, team, and organizational levels. A general understanding is also gained in the areas of accounting, human resources, marketing, law, and leadership. Students become more familiar with library resources needed for successful completion of the courses in the OS major. The course is taught using lecture, discussion, and experiential exercises and promotes the synthesis of knowledge across the OS curriculum.
Organizational Theory & Practice (OSTD 480)
Course Description: This course provides an overview of how organizations work, including theory, research, and application. Students gain a deeper understanding of organizational structure, culture, communication, and strategic planning processes within the internal and external environment. Current trends are also discussed. Students complete cases and engage in experiential exercises to facilitate critical thinking and the application of course content to organizational settings. The final course project integrates knowledge and skills in the area of organizational theory with systematic problem solving skills to assess and diagnose an organizational problem. This course is the Capstone Course for the OS Major.
Course Goals: This course extends the content of the OS courses on interpersonal relationships, team dynamics and leadership by examining organizational behavior at the macro-level. Students gain a deeper understanding of organizational theory and research, including historical and modern era approaches. They are also required to relate what they have learned to organizational settings including an in-depth case study of a single company. Upon completing the course, students are able to explain and apply concepts within the main areas of organizational structure, culture, communication, and process. They are also prepared to complete the Organizational Studies degree and use acquired knowledge to analyze and evaluate real-life experiences in organizations.
