My research is concerned with reactions which occur when electrical current is passed through solutions. One project investigates the factors which control the electrochemical polymerization of dichlorosilanes to form polysilanes.Polysilanes are useful as imaging agents in photolithography, as silicon carbide precursors used to strengthen ceramics, and they have some very interesting electrical and optical properties. Another project concerns the electrochemical reduction of cyclic ketoesters. This reduction has a potential use on a synthetic scale to form ring expansion products. A third project uses computer assisted molecular modeling to investigate the structures of starting materials and products in the reactions given above with the hope of elucidating the structural features which determine the course of the reactions.
