African American Studies Program
Message from the faculty and staff of the African American Studies Program
In the face of the shooting death of unarmed Michael Brown, Jr. in Ferguson, Missouri and the
subsequent outpouring of grief and anger in its wake, we the faculty and staff of the African
American Studies Program at Saint Louis University extend our sincere sympathies and
condolences to Mike Brown's family. We pledge to use our scholarship, service, and teaching
to bring awareness not only to the issues that led to Mike Brown's tragic death, but also to the
myriad issues that continue to negatively affect African American communities like that in
his death will compel us always to fight for justice, equality, healing, and peace for African
Americans in Ferguson and throughout the nation.
How did the United States elect an African American president? Why is there a disproportionate concentration of African American men in state and federal prisons? How are African American women portrayed in U.S. and world media? You will find the answer to these and so many more questions in the African American Studies Program.
African American Studies is a systematic study of the racial, cultural and ethnic experiences of people of African heritage. The course of study enables students to understand national and world views of African American and African-world people in order to determine how such views have affected perceptions of self, family and community.
The African American Studies Program offers a major and minor program, and courses in African American Studies may fulfill selected college core course requirements.
This school-year the African American Studies Program will work to expose the campus and community to world renowned scholars of Africana Studies; entrench the Program in the surrounding neighborhoods; and, most importantly, cultivate the next generation of intellectual leaders. So, if you are interested in African American Studies, please feel free to sit in on a class, attend an event, or stop by to visit. You will find that the African American Studies Program is the model of interdisciplinary excellence at SLU!
