Ph.D. Historical Theology
The Department matriculates no more than five students each year. All students accepted into the program will receive the following funding package:
1.Years 1-3, Students receive a scholarship to cover the full costs of tuition. They are also paid a stipend of $18,000 for nine months, along with health insurance. During these three years, each student will be assigned to a faculty member as a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA). A GRA assists the faculty member in his/her research, and may from time to time help with teaching. The division of labor in these cases will be 70% dedicated to research work and 30% to teaching assistance. The goal of the GRA program is to provide opportunities for the student to develop strong research skills, and to contribute to an original research project. Research is comprised of analytical work, but also the grunt work that supports the final product. The GRA is expected to to assist with both components.
2.Years 4-5: Students who have completed their examinations and dissertation prospectus will gain a teaching fellowship in the department. Renumeration is generally about $12,000. No tuition scholarship is granted during the fellowship as student must have completed coursework by year four. Teaching Fellows are assigned to teach no more than two sections in the department (normally the THEO 100 course or one of the 200-level courses). In the first year of teaching, they must also register for "Teaching in Theology" (Theo 590) for 0 hours. This group will meet once a month to discuss the challenges and methods of teaching. Students are also encouraged to enroll in the Certificate in University Teaching Skills sponsored by the Reinert Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning.
There is no additional financial aid provided after the fifth year, and there will be few teaching opportunities after that point.
Funding is guaranteed for three years provided that:
■The student maintains the minimum GPA of 3.5
■completes all program requirements in a timely manner, including all assessment for every course
■remains on track in their acquisition of languages related to their dissertation topic.
Each student is evaluated at the end of each year and recommended by the Graduate Studies Committee for continued financial aid.
