Athletic Training Program
The Athletic Training Education Program may be newly accredited, but Athletic Training education is not new to SLU. Saint Louis University has prepared many Certified Athletic Trainers through the internship route to certification. However, this method of certification was eliminated by the Board of Certification in 2003.
Perhaps the most prominent Athletic Trainer in SLU History is Bob Bauman, the long-time Billiken Athletic Trainer, who was so highly thought of that West Pine Gym was renamed the Bauman-Eberhardt Center in his honor. "Doc" Bauman also worked with the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Browns baseball teams and was inducted to the Billiken Athletics Hall of Fame in 1976 and the Missouri Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame in 1984.
He was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame in 1968, his bio stated:
"Bob Bauman has never pitched a no-hitter for the Cardinals, yet he's one of the most loved sports personalities in St. Louis. Bauman took care of Saint Louis University athletes from 1928 to 1979, and he also served as athletic trainer for the St. Louis professional baseball teams from 1938 until his present job of acting as an athletic training consultant for the Cardinals. Bauman has had fan appreciation nights in his honor in 1950 by Browns' fans and in 1959 by Cardinals' fans."
