The Graduate Writing Center
Busch Student Center Room 236
Director: Alex Wulff, PhD (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Having an excellent grasp of the critical material in an academic field is not the same as being able to convey that understanding via the written word. As writing professionals, we aim not only to help students polish a particular assignment or product but also to provide skills to navigate confidently and proficiently the process of writing itself.
The Graduate Writing Center provides in-depth, intense, one-on-one assistance to graduate students interested in learning how to improve their written work, especially with regard to the following:
- Consideration of Audience
- Idea/Topic Development
- Clarity and Style
- Reference Documentation
Because we want to help students improve their writing, we expect them to actively engage in a dialogue with their consultant, as they read the student-scholar's text together, asking questions of each other, focusing on the topic at hand, and generally exercising the sort of critical inquiry necessary for the mastery of any skill. We will happily assist student-scholars either with specific assignments or with general questions about writing.
While we are happy to assist writers in using style guides and in abiding by grammatical rules, please note that we are educators, not editors. As such, we will not read a student-scholar's work for grammatical errors or formatting technicalities, fix those errors, and then return the work to the student. However, we will work in consultation with writers in order to highlight recurring errors and to teach them how to look up rules for proper conventions. If a writer is concerned about grammar, he or she should come prepared both with questions and a willingness to learn how to fix his or her mistakes.
While we welcome walk-ins, appointments are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. If you'd like to ensure a particular time slot, please schedule an appointment through SLU Appointments, which can be accessed through the Tools tab in your mySLU account.
