Practice: I practiced for 20 years as a nurse before becoming an educator. I have served primarily maternal-child populations in an urban hospital and an ambulatory care center. I worked for 6 years as a clinical nurse specialist caring for children (and their families) who have allergies, asthma and immunology illnesses. My area of expertise is children with asthma. I have learned a great deal from these children and their families. I work one day a week as a clinical specialist in an allergy clinic.
Teaching: I have taught nursing of children to undergraduate students at both the basic and advanced level and growth and development at the master's level. I believe that teaching is a wonderful opportunity to assist others to gain theoretical and practical knowledge. Further, I believe that education is not merely the acquisition of knowledge, but the pursuit of learning. My goal is to assist students to become lifelong learners. I believe that nursing is a vocation in which nurses work to care for those who need caring. The responsibility of nursing of children is to promote the well-being of children and their families. I hope to personify the mission of Saint Louis University - the pursuit of truth for the greater honor and glory of God and for the service of humanity and to seek excellence in teaching, research, and community service.
Research: I am interested in how children learn activities to care for themselves. I have investigated how children learn to use inhalation medications with the aid of mnemonic devices. I am currently interested in children's use of the diskus inhaler.
Professional and Scholarly Activities: My professional memberships include: Alpha Sigma Nu (Jesuit Honor Society), American Lung Association, American Nurses' Association, Association of Pediatric Oncology Nurses, Midwest Nursing Research Society (Co-chair Nursing of Children Research Section), Missouri Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International, St. Louis Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, Society of Pediatric Nurses.
