Post-Master's Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

We are currently accepting applications for the fall 2014 Post-Master's Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. The application deadline is July 1, 2014 and we encourage students to apply and submit all supporting documents as soon as possible as capacity is limited. This program is being offered in response to the growing need for doctorally-prepared nurse clinicians/scholars and educators. DNP prepared professionals provide evidence-based interventions and best practices to support individuals, families, and populations, and develop systems of care, based on research utilization.
The DNP is a practice-focused doctoral degree that educates nurses to become expert clinicians, leaders in health policy, and catalysts for improved health care delivery within an interprofessional environment. This online program is available to students who possess a master's degree in an advanced practice area such as a nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist.
The DNP curriculum provides sequencing of courses in a flexible but rational manner. The courses are offered online in the fall and spring semesters with one course offered in the summer session. The program requires two campus visits to Saint Louis University. The first expected visit is a 2-3 day orientation at the beginning of the program. A second visit of 1-2 days is expected at the end of the program to present the capstone project. The post-master's DNP requires a total of 28 credit hours beyond the MSN. Students may transfer 5 to 6 credit hours of comparable graduate level coursework at the discretion of the School of Nursing.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Use advanced knowledge of mid-range and translational theories from nursing and other disciplines as a framework for advanced nursing practice.
- Critically examine research and scholarship to support evidence-based clinical practice.
- Exemplify ethical principles in the delivery of comprehensive health care.
- Formulate strategies to maximize health in patient populations.
- Develop clinical competence for advanced practice that provides consumers with primary, secondary, and/or tertiary health care.
- Use technology and information to improve the health care.
- Apply principles of epidemiology, biostatistics, and environmental sciences to recognized populations at risk, patterns of disease, and effectiveness of prevention and intervention.
- Apply current knowledge of organizations and financing of the health care system to improve the outcomes of care.
- Design and implement processes to evaluate outcomes and systems for health care delivery.
- Use business and management strategies for the provision of quality care and efficient use of resources.
- Use advanced communication and leadership skills with interprofessional health care teams to create and evaluate health care delivery systems.
- Influence health policy at institutional, local, state, and national levels.
The capstone is a project which integrates and synthesizes the knowledge you have gained throughout the program. The project will focus on a practice change initiative in risk reduction. Examples include: a program evaluation, a quality improvement project, evaluation of a new practice model, a consulting project, or a pilot study. It is based on the individual student's interests.
