Education is a big part of Saint Louis University's safety efforts. Specialized DPS officers teach the SLU community about ways to improve campus safety and prevent crime. During new-student orientations, employee orientations and at special programs throughout the year, these officers address a wide array of safety issues, including:
- Personal safety
- Alcohol and illegal drug awareness
- Dating safety
These sessions are part of the department's Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) initiative. In keeping with the University's Jesuit tradition, the officers emphasize the responsibility of the individual for not only his or her own safety but also for the safety of the community as a whole.
Long a leader in safety education and crime prevention, SLU's department of public safety was the first private university security force to win a grant through a federal initiative focused on community policing.
