Protecting Personnel Working with Laboratory Animals
The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is also responsible for assuring that personnel have adequate training to safely handle animal subjects and materials involved in studies employing animals. Each person listed on Animal Use Protocols approved by the IACUC must be informed about the OHP and be afforded the opportunity to participate. Saint Louis University has policies in place to provide this assurance and modifies these documents to assure the program is current.
Information on the University Occupational Health Program for Laboratory and Animal Research (OHP) can be found on the Division of Research Administration website.
The OHP is provided for individuals working within SLU animal facilities who are involved in the direct care of vertebrate animals and their living quarters; those individuals who have direct contact with animals (live or dead), their viable tissues, body fluids, or wastes. Participation in the OHP is mandatory for all personnel working in or having access to Saint Louis University animal research facilities (see University Policies, RC-006, AC-006, FA-001).
University personnel working with Laboratory Animals should:
- Review the University Occupational Health Program Policy (RC-006).
- Enroll in the OHP by downloading and submitting the Medical History Questionnaire.
- Read the document "Safe Handling of Lab Animals" and enroll in the Mandatory Animal Use Orientation training*.
