Why is Saint Louis University an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer?
Saint Louis University is a federal contractor. Along with the University's mission, federal contractors are required to be Affirmative Action employers.
What is Affirmative Action?
The implementation of special recruitment and developmental efforts to overcome the underrepresentation of targeted groups to achieve a balanced and diverse faculty, staff, and student population. Target groups include persons of color, women, persons with different abilities, disabled veterans, and Vietnam era veterans.
What is Equal Opportunity?
It is imperative that all persons be afforded equal opportunity. It is our policy to recruit, hire, train, promote, and in all ways provide fair treatment on the basis of merit without regard to race, color, sex, age, religion, national origin, disability, veteran status, or sexual orientation.
What is Harassment?
Harassment is any intentional unwelcome, unsolicited, and offensive conduct that tends to injure, degrade, disgrace, or show hostility toward a person because of sex, race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, disability, age, sexual orientation, marital status, military status, pregnancy, or any other characteristic protected by law. "Sexual" harassment includes conduct that is of a sexual nature or related to a person's gender and may include persons of the same sex. Because of our legal and moral responsibility, the University will take all steps reasonably necessary to prevent harassment from occurring.
What is diversity and how does it fit in?
Diversity is understanding and appreciating that we are all different and recognizing each person's unique value, contributions, and potential. By recognizing and valuing our differences, we can fully immerse ourselves in the higher education experience, maintain effective relationships with our entire community, and create an inclusive environment that maximizes retention of our student body, faculty, and staff.
