1. Do I need health insurance?
Yes. It is mandatory for all full-time SLU undergraduate students to have health insurance. If you do not carry the University Health Plan, a waiver must be completed and a copy of your health insurance card provided by the beginning of fall semester. 2. Do you take my insurance?
We bill all insurance companies. However, call your benefits plan coordinator to see if they will cover our physician services. If not, many students select the University Health Plan that pays 100% of all charges at Student Health and Counseling. For counseling services, any balance that your insurance does not cover is written off by the University.
3. How do I get the university health plan insurance coverage?
Saint Louis University offers health insurance to SLU students for general care, emergency care, hospitalization, visits to specialists, and other services. 4. Can I get a copy of my counseling records?
Yes. Students who wish to receive a copy of their counseling records must complete a release of confidential information form. Please read the release closely. The Student Health and Counseling Center adheres to all HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act) regulations, as well as additional mental health legal and ethical rules. It is strongly advised that you consult with your counselor prior to signing the release of information and reviewing your mental health records.
5. Where can I get information about STDs/alcohol/drugs/quitting smoking/nutrition/stress?
There are a number of ways to obtain the information you want on a variety of health topics. Ask a nurse or counselor either by phone or email, look on our website or come to the Health Center.
6. How do I get information on my sick student?
In an emergency parents will be called immediately by the emergency room physician or university officials. Otherwise, the student needs to have signed a release of information form for the staff at the Student Health and Counseling Services to release information about them to anyone, including parents. The counselors cannot share any information with outside parties about the student unless a release of information has been signed.
7. Can I see a counselor the same day I call for an appointment?
Most of the time, counseling appointments need to be made in advance. In crisis or emergency situations, counselors can see you the same day or within a short duration thereafter.
8. What do I do if I can't wait to see mental health counselor?
If you are in mental health crisis during normal business hours, you will speak with a counselor immediately. If a crisis occurs after business hours or on the weekend, call 314-977-2323 and you will be connected with the counselor on call to help determine a plan of action. If you are in need of emergency care call 911.
9. Is mental health counseling free?
No. The Student Counseling Center typically bills the student's insurance and accepts whatever the insurance pays. If the insurance denies payment, the cost is written off and no one is billed. Pre-authorization for counseling services is the responsibility of the student. 10. Does my insurance need to be billed for counseling?
No. A student may wish to pay an out-of-pocket fee for each session instead of using their insurance. The counselor will speak with the student about this option at the request of the student. If you have questions prior to your first appointment, call 314-977-7192.
12. Do my parents need to know that I have used the services of the Student Health and Counseling Center?
No. Missouri law states that individuals age 18 and older are legal adults. Therefore, if the student wishes to share any information about the services they have received, they must sign a release of information form. If you are concerned about counseling services showing up on your insurance statement, talk with your counselor or the Patient Care Coordinator about alternative payment options.
