What does this mean to you?
If you have existing Wimba Classroom recordings (Wimba Archives) that you wish to keep, you will need to download the MP4 version of the recordings prior to January 14, 2013. Please give yourself plenty of time to do this, especially if you have never downloaded the MP4 version of your Wimba recordings before.
If you have links to Wimba recordings, for example in a SLU Global (Blackboard) course or on a Google site, those links will no longer work after January 14, 2013. Follow the instructions below to download your Wimba recordings and upload them to an alternative location in order to get new links to the recordings.
What is an MP4?
An ".MP4" file most commonly contains both audio and video content, as opposed to an .MP3 which contains only audio. The .MP4 file format can be played on multiple types of devices, including a PC, Mac, iPad/iTouch, etc. It is a portable way to save and distribute audio and video content. Wimba Archives are normally viewed using a web browser to ‘stream' the recording to your browser from the Wimba Classroom server. After January 14, the Wimba server will no longer be available; however, if you choose to download MP4 versions of your recordings, you'll still have a way to retain your content.
Do you have to save off your Wimba Archive recordings?
No, it is entirely up to you. If you no longer need access to the recording(s), you can do nothing and the recordings will just go away when the Wimba Classroom system is decommissioned. Consider if you will be able to reuse the recording in the near future, or:
- Do you need to retain the recording as part of the historical record for a course?
- Do you want to reuse the recording for a course in the current or a future term?
- Does the recording contain information that is specific to a course or group of students and cannot be used in another course?

How do I Generate (Create) the MP4 version of a Wimba Archive Recording?
1. Locate the Wimba Archive in your SLU Global course.
- Scan your SLU Global courses for Wimba content, indicated by the Wimba icon
- Use the "Tool Link" for Wimba Classroom to view all Wimba content associated with a SLU Global course. Click here for detailed instructions.
2. Kick-off the Generation (Creation) of the downloadable MP4 version of the Archive.
- Verify that you have enabled the "Download Archive as MP4" option for each Wimba Archive that you want to download. If you do not see the "MP4" button next to the archive name, click the Setting icon to modify the Archive Settings.
- The MP4 will need to be generated before it is available for download. When you click the MP4 button:
- If the MP4 file already exists on the Wimba server, you will be prompted to save the file.
- If the MP4 file has not yet been created, you will see an alert that the MP4 you requested is being generated, check back later.
- Do this well in advance of the January 14 deadline! The amount of time necessary to generate the downloadable version of a Wimba recording can vary greatly based on how long the recording is and how many other users have also kicked-off the generation of MP4 versions of their recordings.
3. Download the MP4 file once it has been created.
- Save the file with a name that is meaningful to you. Perhaps the course, term, and recording topic would be helpful information to include in the filename.
- Save your MP4 files to your local computer or to your U: drive. Please note that these can be large files, so talk with your IT Service Desk if you have a large number of recordings to store.
How do I Re-Use your Downloaded MP4 versions of Wimba Archive?
1. Upload to Tegrity
- Log in to Tegrity at slu.tegrity.com with your SLU username and password.
- Click on the name of the course where you want to upload the Wimba MP4.
- You can always choose your Private Course in Tegrity and then copy or move the recording into another course at a later time.
- Click on the "Choose an Action" dropdown at the bottom left of the page.
- Select the "Upload Video as Class" option.
- Enter a title for the recording and then browse your computer for the MP4 file to upload.
- Click "Upload Video" to begin uploading the MP4 file to the selected Tegrity course.
- Note: Allow time for processing before attempting to view your recording in Tegrity.

2. Upload to the Streaming Media Server
The Instructional Media Centers (IMC)
provide a service where they will upload video files for faculty to a streaming media server. Instructors will be provided with links to their video(s) that they can then add to a SLU Global course or otherwise distribute to students.
- Bring your downloaded MP4 files to either David Stoddard at IMC South or Jonathan Grimm at IMC North on a portable storage device (flash drive, external hard drive).
- Note: There is a 1 GB file size limit. Files larger than 1 GB may not successfully upload.
- Provide the IMC team with the following information:
- Your name
- The course the files are for
- Are the links going to be used for one semester or kept for use at anytime
- When do the video links need to be available
- Once the IMC has your information, they will upload files to the streaming media server. You will receive a password to access a webpage containing links to your uploaded MP4s (sorted by course). You can then include these links in your SLU Global course or other content.
- This process should take about a week to complete, so it is highly recommended that you get your recordings to the IMC well before the January 14, 2013 due date!
