Overview of the Tuition Exchange Program
What is Tuition Exchange?
The Tuition Exchange is a reciprocal scholarship program for children and other family members of faculty and staff employed at over 590 participating institutions. Eligibility requirements are determined by the home institution. The general principle is, if the home institution grants a full-tuition remission benefit to the child of a faculty or staff member, then the child is eligible to apply for a possible Tuition Exchange award at the participating institution(s) of their choice. It is important to realize, however, that each institution sets their own rules about how students are selected for a Tuition Exchange Scholarship. Many schools use academic achievement as a determining factor, and will only consider incoming Freshman applicants.
At Saint Louis University, an employee must have completed at least three years of continuous full time service to be considered eligible to apply for Tuition Exchange at participating institutions. However, having at least three years of service does not automatically guarantee you will be certified for Tuition Exchange.
Additionally, participating Tuition Exchange schools do not have the same deadline for the last date they will receive Tuition Exchange Certifications for the following Fall. To ensure eligibility, it is imperative that the eligible parent knows each school's deadline to request certification, as there is no guarantee that a late certification will be honored by the desired institution.
Scholarships cover full tuition, or a rate set by Tuition Exchange. For 2013-2014, private institutions that charge more than $31,500 for tuition are permitted to award less than their full tuition, but not less than the set rate of $31,500 ($32,500 for 2014-2015). Some colleges cover other expenses, such as room in their awards. Any additional expenses incurred by the student such as room, board, travel related expenses, or books, are the sole responsibility of the student and/or the student's family. Tuition Exchange is for 8 semesters, four years of school or upon completion of a bachelor degree, whichever comes first.
Each participating institution determines the number of Tuition Exchange Scholarships it will grant to incoming students each year. As a general rule, these positions are extremely limited in number, hence highly competitive in terms of both space and selectivity. As stated above, there are no guarantees to the children of any given faculty or staff member that they will be able to utilize the Tuition Exchange benefit at the institution of their choice. Application Process for Eligible Employees of Saint Louis University:
1. By October 1st, the parent employed at Saint Louis University sends in the Tuition Exchange application to the Benefits Specialist in Human Resources, along with the names of the participating institution(s) to which their child is planning to apply for admission. 2. Once the Benefits Specialist confirms the parent's benefits eligibility, he/she will confirm with the Tuition Exchange Coordinator. If the employee is given eligibility, a $35 processing fee will be requested. Employees must pay the fee before the Tuition Exchange coordinator will send information to the prospective institutions. Applying for tuition exchange to Human Resources does not guarantee that you will be certified for Tuition Exchange.
3. Once the fee is received the Tuition Exchange coordinator notifies each of the school(s) to which the student is applying, certifying the student's eligibility to participate in that school's Tuition Exchange program, should a position be available. A copy of the eligibility letter for each school will also be sent to the eligible employee. The student applies to the participating institution(s) they designated above. (It is also recommended that the student or parent contacts the Tuition Exchange coordinator at their desired school(s) to see if there are any special admissions dates they need to follow. It is not uncommon for institutions to encourage Tuition Exchange applicants to apply for Early Action, so it is the responsibility of the student/parent to find this information out, and follow those admission guidelines.)
4. After admission decisions have been made, the Tuition Exchange coordinator at each participating institution in which the child applied, informs whether or not he/she will be offered a Tuition Exchange Scholarship. Please be aware that decisions by each participating institution are done on their own time frame. However, most schools wait until after March 1st to make decisions for Tuition Exchange.
5. Once awards are given, the employee should notify the tuition exchange coordinator of the results and which school the student will be attending.
** If given a Tuition Exchange Scholarship the eligible employee must be re-certified each year. The employee will notify the Benefits Specialist in Human Resources and provide another $35 application fee. This is done every year that the employee would like to have certification.

Application Process for Eligible Employees of Participating Institutions whose Children are Applying to Saint Louis University:
1. The parent employed at a participating university notifies the Tuition Exchange coordinator at his/her home institution with their child's legal name, mailing address, social security number, and the names of the participating institution(s) to which their child is planning to apply for admission.
2. Once the coordinator at the home institution confirms the parent's benefits eligibility, they will notify the Tuition Exchange Coordinator at Saint Louis University certifying the student's eligibility to participate in Saint Louis University's Tuition Exchange program, should a position be available. Our deadline for applying is February 1st. The Tuition Exchange coordinator will confirm with both the home institution's coordinator and the parent that we have received an eligibility letter.
3. The student applies to Saint Louis University. Tuition Exchange is only given to incoming freshmen students. It is not awarded to transfer students or students who are already attending and their parents become eligible for the benefit after the student has already begun attending Saint Louis University.
4. After admission decisions have been made, the Tuition Exchange coordinator at Saint Louis University informs eligible students of whether or not he/she will be offered a Tuition Exchange Scholarship. Tuition Exchange decisions are made after March 1st.
