Bachelor of Arts
A Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History from Saint Louis University provides students an in-depth study into the art world, both in prominent Western periods and Eastern cultures. Designing our curriculum to cover such a wide-range of art offers students an opportunity to delve deeper into their specific periods of interest.
No matter the path a student chooses, each receives a strong, balanced foundation of study of western traditions in Art History through a series of core classes. Our faculty have fashioned this curriculum to develop essential art historical methodologies such as critical analysis, social history, semiotics and other methods within all our majors.
To earn a B.A. in Art History, students must complete 36 hours of required coursework. 15 of the 36 hours must be from the 300/400-level courses.
Students can also minor in Art History. The minor curriculum provides a general introduction to western art history, complementing a major in a different field through its emphasis on understanding our visually based world.
To earn a minor in Art History, students must complete 18 hours of coursework, with 9 hours coming from the 300/400 level.

If a transfer student has hours in Art History and these hours meet the transfer credit policy of the College of Arts and Sciences, then the Art History hours will be recognized as follows:
For the Major....
No more than 12 hours of transfer credit may be applied to fulfill specific courses or elective courses towards the completion of the 36 hours required for the Major in Art History
For the Minor...
No more than 6 hours of transfer credit may be applied to specific courses or elective courses towards the completion of the 18 hours required for a Minor in Art History.
