The Theatre Program at SLU offers three degree paths - a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, a Minor in Theatre and a Drama Studies Minor.
The Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre provides students an avenue to strengthen their abilities in theatre while gaining a knowledge about its theory, creation and history.
Students must complete a core curriculum emphasizing a liberal arts approach to higher education. An understanding and familiarity with other disciplines is essential to the formation of well-rounded, well-educated theatre artists.
In addition to the core curriculum, students must take an additional 36 hours in specialized classes. These classes explore the theoretical, technical and performance areas of theatre.
Students can also pursue a Minor in Theatre. The minor requires 21 hours of theatre courses as well as completion of the Theatre Practicum.
The Drama Studies Minor is offered in conjunction with the Department of English and Department of Modern and Classical Languages. This minor offers students a concentration of drama in all genres and eras, preparing students for careers in dramaturgy, literary management and drama criticism. Students completing the Drama Studies Minor may find themselves engaged in assisting the creation of new dramatic works as well as literary/production research and development.
For students who intend to major in theatre:
A total of 18 credit hours of theatre course work may be accepted toward the degree requirements. An audition or portfolio review/interview with a full-time theatre faculty member is required prior to final articulation of credits toward the major. Theatre credits may be accepted that do not articulate as fulfilling a major requirement. These credits may be applied as related hours or as elective credit toward graduation.
In the case of THR 355 Theatre Practicum requirements, the transfer applicant will be required to complete one less than the expected semesters required to complete graduation requirements. For example, if a student program of study requires 4 semesters at SLU prior to graduation, 3 semesters of THR 355 must be successfully completed. This requirement will be articulated at the time of matriculation into the program.
For students who intend to minor in theatre:
A total of 9 credit hours of theatre course work may be accepted toward the minor requirements. An audition or portfolio review/interview with a full-time theatre faculty member is required prior to final articulation of credits toward the minor. Theatre credits may be accepted that do not articulate as fulfilling a minor requirement. These credits may be applied as elective credit toward graduation.
In the case of THR 355 Theatre Practicum requirements, the transfer applicant will be required to complete a minimum of 2 semesters successfully.
For students using transfer credit in theatre to satisfy the core requirement in fine arts:
In general, practicum or internship theatre credits may not be used to fulfill the fine arts requirement.
