Professionals in remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) are in ever-increasing demand in a variety of disciplines. The graduate certificate program in Advanced Remote Sensing and GIS in the Center for Environmental Sciences was developed to fill a growing demand for digital image analysis and advanced GIS skills in today's job market. This graduate certificate program offers a mix of GIS theory and practical training in remote sensing and digital image analysis for individuals who have previously completed their undergraduate education in a wide range of disciplines, or for current professionals have gained a certain level of GIS experience and wish to refine their skills.
The emphasis in the program is on advanced methods, technologies, and applications of remote sensing and GIS to spatial problem solving. Students are required to complete 15-credit hours of courses.
The program covers the latest image processing techniques for optical, thermal, RADAR, LiDAR remote sensing, geospatial methods and principles of spatial analysis, data base design, cartographic representation, management and data mining with integration of GIS, remote sensing and GPS. Various applications of the techniques including risk assessment and mitigation, environmental modeling, resources exploration, sustainable development, natural resource management, transportation, air-pollution & control, forest fire management, etc. are also practiced. Theories and lectures are accompanied with hands-on projects and lab training with ArcGIS, ENVI+IDL.
The objective of the program is not only to cultivate GIS expert users, but also to ensure that students become well grounded professionals in theoretical knowledge and practical skills for developing new applications in various disciplines of geospatial analysis and remote sensing.
