Waves of Democratic Change
Dr. Valerie Bunce spoke on "Waves of Democratic Change" at Saint Louis University on April 28, 2010 at the SLU Museum of Art, 3663 Lindell Blvd. She compared the circumstances and events leading up to the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe with more recent electoral revolutions in Ukraine, Georgia, and elsewhere.
Valerie Bunce is the Aaron Binenkorb Professor of International Studies and Professor of Government at Cornell. Her research and teaching address comparative democratization, international democracy promotion and inter-ethnic cooperation and conflict, focusing particularly on east-central Europe, the Balkans, and the Soviet successor states, though her comparative interests extend to Latin America.
She is the author of Subversive Institutions (Cambridge University Press, 1999) and numerous other books and articles. Her most recent book, Defeating Authoritarian Leaders: U.S. Democracy Assistance, Transnational Networks, and Democratizing Elections in Mixed Regimes (co-authored with Sharon Wolchik) will be published in 2010 (Cambridge University Press).
