Prof. Lumpp has also organized the Walter J. Ong Society.
A conference on "Walter J. Ong and Social Media" was held at Gonzaga University in February 2014. Selected papers from the conference have been published in Communication Research Trends, May 2014.
The Walter J Ong Center for Language, Culture, and Media Studies is pleased to announce its sponsorship of Steps through Time: Journeys in the Middle East, an exhibit of documentary photographs by Dr. Thomas Oates that will open with a reception and colloquium on the 2nd Floor of the Pius Memorial Library at Saint Louis University, October 8th, 2010, 2-4 p.m.
There are approximately 50 photographs from Steps though Time: Journeys in the Middle East, an exhibit of recent work by Dr. Thomas Oates, a nationally-known documentarist and a distinguished Saint Louis University alumnus. His photos will hang on the 2nd Floor of the Pius Library, from October 8th, 2010 until the end of the spring term, 2011. The exhibit is sponsored by the Walter J. Ong Center for Language, Culture, and Media Studies with further support from American Studies, Communication, English, Film Studies, Fine and Performing Arts, History, and Theological Studies.
Speakers featured at the opening of the exhibit include John Renard of Theological Studies, Susanne Wiedemann from American Studies, and Hayrettin Yucesoy from History, all of whom will comment upon the Oates photographs from the standpoint of their respective professional expertise.
The exhibit represents Oates' work of the last two decades, currently supported by a grant from the Ford Foundation. The images are drawn from long-term cultural contacts in Turkey, Jordan, the West Bank, Israel, and Cyprus. They are organized and presented under the rubrics, "Borders," "Heritage," "Portraits," "Gatherings," and "Sacred Spaces," categories designed to emphasize the habitual life worlds of these communities rather than crises and political emergencies.
