Saint Louis University welcomes international students from all countries at most levels of English skills. International students include individuals from foreign countries who are seeking a university degree and should be entering or have entered the United States with a student visa.
Non-native English-speaking students who score above 80 on the TOEFL iBT and above 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam are eligible to apply for direct admission to a specific academic program at Saint Louis University. These students should apply at slu.edu/undergraduate-admission/international-admission.
Three Levels of ESL Instruction
For students who have excellent academic records but whose iBT scores are below 80 and whose IELTS scores are below 6.5, Saint Louis University, through the College of Arts and Sciences, offers three levels of English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction. The University determines which level the student should enter based on their English proficiency, as determined by iBT and IELTS scores. The length of time that students spend in each level is dependent upon the amount of time it takes for them to become proficient; students are not required to move through each level sequentially.
All ESL students will be tested with the PBT TOEFL and the SLUWE on arrival to campus for final placement in appropriate level of the ESL program.
