Kanak S. Gautam, PhD, MBA is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Management & Policy and received his MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India, specializing in marketing. After working in India for three years in automobile marketing, Dr. Gautam did my PhD in Organizational Behavior in the School of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, graduating in 1992.
Dr. Gautam joined SLU in 1991. His research relates to the governance of hospitals, community benefit for non-profit hospitals and human resource management. In 2006, he was conferred the Dean Conley Award for "Paper of the Year" in Health Management from the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). In 1995, Dr. Gautam was co-recipient of the 1995 Edgar C. Hayhow Award for best paper in Hospital and Health Services Administration, a journal published by ACHE. He is on the Editorial Board of Health Care Management Review, a leading journal on Healthcare Management.
Dr. Gautam teaches courses in the Master of Health Administration program related to Management of Healthcare Organizations and Management of Human Resources in Healthcare. In 2011, he started a new elective course on Healthcare Supply Chain Management which is one of few courses offered in MHA programs nationally. Dr. Gautam received "Professor of the Year" teaching awards in 1994 and 1998.
