Roger Lewis, PhD, CIH is the Chair of the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health. As chair, Dr. Lewis leads eight full-time and several adjunct faculty members in curriculum development and education both at the Master and Doctoral level. The Department includes the Institute for Biosecurity, Center for Environmental Education and Training, and the Environmental Health Research Laboratory.
Dr. Lewis has directed the Environmental Health Research Laboratory, located at the SLU medical school, since 1997. Funding at the laboratory has largely been from federal grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Additional funding has come from the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA) and professional trade associations. His laboratory research has included projects including: removal of lead and allergens from residential surfaces, growth and eradication of fungi and dust mites from carpets, resuspension of aerosols from surfaces, use of GIS and mathematical models for targeting lead remediation in communities, development of chemi-fluorescent lead sensors, and development of portable water filters for prevention of diarrheal disease.
Dr. Lewis also serves as an internship advisor and preceptor for students interested in Global Health placing several students in internships in the Dominican Republic to conduct disease surveillance related to children's health and diarrheal disease prevention.
As a board certified industrial hygienist (CIH), Dr. Lewis has over 25 years of experience in industry and consulting in areas of recognition, evaluation, and control of occupational and environmental health hazards. Dr. Lewis has provided expert witness support in many types of environmental or occupational litigation.
Dr. Lewis is a member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, American Academy of Industrial Hygiene, and the Air Quality Division of American Society of Standards, Testing, and Materials (ASTM), D22- Surface and Dermal Sampling.
