Dr. True is the Director, Health Services Research and Development Division, Research Service, St. Louis Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Research Professor, George Warren Brown School of Social Work, Washington University, St. Louis, MO.
His research interests center on issues in psychiatric genetics concerning traumatic stress, drug and alcohol use, health services utilization, and affective disorders. He has conducted research using twin models to explore issues in mental health epidemiology including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, alcohol and drug abuse and dependence, affective disorders, and familial patterns of transmission through environmental and genetic pathways.
He is leading a group of VA and University scholars exploring a range of medical and mental health outcomes of Department of Veterans Affairs medical system patients. He has been funded by the Veterans Administration, National Institutes on Drug Abuse, and National Institutes on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to develop research based upon a large panel of identical and fraternal twins who were veterans of the Vietnam Era.
He has been engaged in projects in Peru, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Chile in various roles, and has interest in global health practice.
