Saint Louis University Latin American Studies Degree OverviewSaint Louis University's undergraduate degree in Latin American studies provides you with a thorough understanding of Latin America from an interdisciplinary perspective. It offers courses in economics, history, modern and classical languages, political science, business, sociology, public health, criminal justice and theology.
If you choose to major in Latin American studies at SLU, you will spend at least one semester in a Latin American country participating in service-oriented programs and research projects connected with community development. You'll work with less affluent communities, policy makers and/or community activists, then present your work as part of a capstone project within a senior inquiry course. Latin American studies majors at SLU also must also complete a minor in Spanish.
What You'll Learn in SLU's Latin American Studies Degree Program
Undergraduate students in SLU's Latin American studies degree program complete 33 credit hours of coursework, including three required core courses, seven electives with a concentration either in the humanities or the social sciences, and a senior inquiry course.
If you pursue a minor in this area, you'll complete 18 hours of coursework in Latin American studies and also spend one semester abroad doing at least 40 hours of community service in Latin America. Students who complete three core courses and a senior inquiry course can earn a concentration in Latin American studies.
What Can You Do With a Degree in Latin American Studies from SLU?
An undergraduate degree in Latin American studies prepares you to enter the fields of international trade and finance, foreign service, teaching, publishing, international law, immigration studies, journalism and Hispanic media, or communications.
You will also be prepared to work in Latin American offices within government agencies, nonprofits and NGOs.
