Raymond L. Windle, S.J., 1928-2010
A former member of the Saint Louis University community has passed away. Raymond L. Windle, S.J., died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010. He was 82.

A Jesuit for 64 years, Fr. Windle entered the Society of Jesus at St. Stanislaus Seminary in Florissant, Mo., on August 18, 1946, and was ordained on June 16, 1959, at St. Mary's College in Kansas.
After ordination and tertianship, Fr. Windle completed an M.A. in comparative literature at Indiana University in Bloomington.
He went on to teach English at St. Louis University High School from 1962-1978. In the middle of that assignment, he took a sabbatical for additional study and part-time teaching at St. Joseph's Preparatory School in Philadelphia, Penn. and Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, Cal.
Known nationally among teachers of English, Fr. Windle was invited to serve as a member of the national Advanced Placement English Committee in 1970.
Among students he had a reputation as a gifted and demanding teacher. He shared with them his love of Shakespeare and Chaucer and delighted in reading them Canterbury Tales. Outside the classroom, Fr. Windle showed special care for students who did not otherwise receive much attention.
From 1978-1984, Windle worked at Saint Louis University, first in the admissions office and then as a teacher of Latin and Greek. He then became a chaplain in the pastoral care department at St. Alexius Hospital in St. Louis -- a position he held until his retirement in 2007. He was devoted to responding to the pastoral and spiritual needs of the patients.
Fr. Windle is preceded in death by his sisters Mary Gage and Sr. Mary Benigna, C.S.J., and by his brothers Ralph and Vincent. He is survived by several nieces and
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, at St. Francis Xavier (College) Church. A funeral Mass will follow at 7:30 p.m. Burial will take place at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Calvary Cemetery.
