With the opening of its new Center for Global Citizenship, Saint Louis University has created a monument to the mantra, "Think globally, work locally."
Adorned with dozens of colorful national flags representing countries around the world, the center stands as a physical reminder of SLU's presence on the international stage of education, said University President Lawrence Biondi, S.J.
"Saint Louis University's Catholic, Jesuit mission calls us to make a world of difference, not just here at home, but also around the globe," Biondi said. "This new center is a clear sign that SLU truly has become a global university."
Indeed, this academic year, SLU enrolled one of its largest groups of international students in history. The University's new Center for Global Citizenship aims to meet the growing needs of these students by placing all related academic units and support services under one roof.
Located in Des Peres Hall, which was extensively renovated and updated, the center houses the office of international services, the international studies program and the English as a Second Language Program - units that were previously separated on campus.
Moreover, a 1,000-square-foot student lounge features comfortable seating and access to international media outlets. In addition, a catering kitchen, located in an adjoining room, offers opportunities for students to cook up some international fare.
To make the far corners of the globe more accessible to students and faculty, the center also features state-of-the-art conference rooms with global teleconferencing capabilities. There's also a classroom dedicated to supporting international teaching.
"Our Center for Global Citizenship celebrates our growing cultural diversity as well as our common mission," Biondi said. "More than anything, this new center is a meeting place - a place to come together and forge connections."
