Casa de Salud, a health and wellness center that serves Hispanic immigrants, is hosting an open house aimed at bringing people and groups together who share a common interest in community health outreach and the Latino community.
The open house will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17 at Casa de Salud, 3200 Chouteau Ave. The event is open to the SLU community. Anyone who works in community health or medicine, is active in the Latino community or would like to learn more about Casa de Salud is encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served.
"The open house will give people the opportunity to discuss their projects and interests, which we hope will lead to collaborative partnerships and a more unified community outreach for Casa de Salud," said Chase Huey, the health literacy coordinator at Casa de Salud.
Casa de Salud was built on a foundation of community collaboration. Sponsored by Saint Louis University, the clinic is run by a staff of five paid employees, dozens of undergraduate and graduate volunteers from Saint Louis University and Washington University, as well as more than 100 volunteer physicians, nurses and community members.
Casa de Salud has existing relationships with Health Literacy Missouri, Saint Louis University's Center for Outcomes Research, Washington University's Center for Latino Family Research and many other prominent community partners.
This year, the center will kick-off Salud Savvy, a two-year health literacy project designed to increase the overall level of health understanding and access within the St. Louis Latino community. Salud Savvy will create a network of Navigators and Promotores de Salud (community health workers) who will both advocate and educate on a variety of mental and physical health topics. To determine what needs are most pertinent Casa de Salud will partner with SLU to conduct a Health Needs Assessment over the next two years. The project will be the most expansive analysis of the health needs of the Latino community in St. Louis ever done.
