The Saint Louis University Library Associates (SLULA), a non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance the visibility of SLU's three libraries, has given a $25,000 gift to the University.

Hugh Law, president of SLULA, stressed the importance of supporting the mission of the University Libraries and the students who gain knowledge from the materials available there.
"Nothing is more important in the university experience than for a student to learn how to educate him-or herself from documents in a field of study - whether on paper or electronically," Law said.
The gift will be used to promote the development of University collections and services at Pius XII Memorial Library, the Medical Center Library and the Omer Poos Law Library.
SLULA was founded in 1964 by University President Paul Reinert, S.J., area business leader Henry Scherck and J. Barry McGannon, S.J., the long-time vice president for development and chancellor of SLU. The goal was to build a closer relationship between the University and the community and to enhance the prestige of SLU as one of St. Louis' most important and sustainable organizations.

Gail Staines, Ph.D., assistant vice president for University Libraries, said now, more than four decades later, that support continues to help move the libraries forward.
"For 47 years, the Library Associates have supported collections and services with a significant annual donation," Staines said. "We have been able to enhance the libraries' collections - particularly in the area of special collections - because of this long-tern generosity."
SLULA's premier development event is the Saint Louis Literary Award. First presented as the Wilma and Roswell Messing, Jr. Award in 1967, literary giants from around the world have traveled to St. Louis to accept this honor. Recipients have included acclaimed authors Salman Rushdie, Don DeLillo, Joyce Carol Oates, E. L. Doctorow and many others.
Today the honor, known simply as the Saint Louis Literary Award, is presented annually by the Saint Louis University Library Associates.
