ST. LOUIS -- Artemis Simopoulos, M.D., an internationally recognized physician and nutrition expert, will speak about fats and heart disease at 4 p.m. Monday, March 7 in conference room 468 of Doisy Research Center, 1100 S. Grand Blvd.
She is the author of "The Omega Diet" and president of the Center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health, which is based in Washington, D.C.
In her book, Simopoulos explains not all fats are created equal. The omega-3 fats - found in fish and some green vegetables - have heart-protective properties. By contrast, omega-6 fats - found in vegetable oils and many meats -- cause heart disease and other medical problems.
Simopoulos's lecture is entitled "The Importance of the Omega-6/Omega-3 Fatty Acid Ratio in Cardiovascular Disease and Other Chronic Diseases." Open to the public, health professionals and university faculty, the lecture is a Saint Louis University Center for Cardiovascular Research Seminar.
