A panel discussion and educational meeting, "Happy Moms, Healthy Babies: Supporting Breastfeeding at SLU," will be held from noon-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, in the Busch Student Center, Room 253D.
The event is sponsored by the Saint Louis University department of biology, the department of nutrition and dietetics, the St. Louis Chapter of the Association of Women in Science, and the Saint Louis University Pregnant and Parenting Student Association.
Light refreshments will be served, but please bring a lunch.
A pre-event survey has been developed to gauge the experiences, needs and positions of nursing mothers at SLU.
"Happy Moms, Healthy Babies" has three main goals.
The first goal is to promote education on issues related to breast feeding. Panel members will provide a brief presentation on the health benefits of breast feeding for babies and for mom. In addition, panelists will highlight provisions made in the new health care law which require that employers with more than 50 employees provide private, non-bathroom facilities for pumping.
The second goal is to promote awareness about breastfeeding support at SLU. Specifically, the panel will feature SLU employees and students (faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, etc) who will detail their experiences with breastfeeding while working or attending school at SLU. How are nursing moms supported at SLU? What can be done to improve the situation?
The third goal is to identify specific action items related to supporting nursing moms at SLU. Based on the contributions of the panelists and audience members, what are the needs of nursing moms at SLU? What specific actions can be taken to support nursing moms at SLU?
The discussion is open to students, faculty, staff, women and men.
