Why is this study being done?
Saint Louis University Center for Vaccine Development is looking for volunteers to participate in a research study of human coronaviruses.
The study is sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Medical Research.
Coronaviruses can infect and cause illnesses of the nose, throat and lungs. The illnesses can be like the common cold or like influenza, but also more severe like pneumonia.
Patients who have heart and lung diseases are possibly at risk for worse illnesses from coronavirus.
The infection could also make the heart and lung diseases worse for awhile.
The purposes of this study are to determine the numbers and types of illnesses coronaviruses cause in older adults with heart and lung diseases, and compare this to healthy younger adults.
- To participate you must be 60 years or older and have a history of heart or lung disease OR 18 to 40 years old and in good general health
- Your study participation will last 2 years
- After enrollment in the study, you will be asked to come in for evaluation each time you have an acute respiratory illness that meets the study criteria
- You will be reimbursed $50 for each study visit
