SLU Hosts Sports Industry and Law Symposium, Unveils New Alliance for Sports Business

The sports business program at Saint Louis University's John Cook School of Business will host the Sports Industry and Law Symposium Friday-Saturday, April 15-16, at the University's Cook Hall, 3674 Lindell Blvd.

Guest speakers will include top sports industry executives from the four major U.S. sports leagues as well as the NCAA, U.S. Soccer Federation, MLS, NASCAR, STATS Inc., Nike, adidas and several others. Academic experts from some of the country's top sports business programs also are on the program.
Dr. Anastasios Kaburakis, professor of management and sports business, said SLU's new sports business program will prepare the next generation of industry leaders.

A rare teamwork between a highly prestigious business school and global sports industry leaders, outstanding faculty with a passion for sports business research, teaching and service, and a tremendously supportive sports business community from the greater region with executives ready to attend to students' pursuits in this burgeoning field," Kaburakis said.
"Our students, university and the City of St. Louis needed this program. Our entire academic field is excited to see it take its next few steps, at a very important time for sports business education.
Kaburakis adds that events such as the symposium provide an opportunity for continued knowledge of the complex and growing field of sports business and marketing.
"We are building bridges to sports business," Kaburakis said.
Friday, April 15
Sessions include a variety of Alliance for Sports Business workshops covering topics such as student internships, careers in sports business, recruitment and retention, research and development, and curriculum assessment. The Alliance is the national coalition among accredited business schools with sports business programs.
The day concludes with a special keynote discussion, Sports Business: Evolving the New Normal, presented by Bill DeWitt III, president of the St. Louis Cardinals, and Mark Lamping, CEO of the new Meadowlands Stadium and former president of the Cardinals.
Friday's keynote program is free and open to the public, however registration is required.
Saturday, April 16
The symposium will include panel discussions with key sports, business, law and academic leaders. Topics include:
- Aligning Industry and Academia
- Sports Business, Law and Analytics
- State of the Industry: Issues and Trends
- Sporting Goods Industry: Marketing, Sponsorships and Licensing
- Entertainment and the Gaming Industry
- Agents, Contracts, Negotiations and Ethics
The cost of Saturday's program is $150. Admission is free for students and faculty.
Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits for licensed attorneys also are available. Missouri licensed attorneys will receive 6.5 CLE credits. There is an additional $100 fee for those who wish to earn the CLE credits.
