The radiation therapy seniors, in the department of medical imaging and radiation therapeutics, received second place at the annual Chicago Area Radiation Therapists (CART) Scholar Bowl in Chicago, Ill., April 8-10.
Each year the Saint Louis University radiation therapy students participate in this competition amongst schools throughout the nation.
This year the group placed second overall, earning the best in the program's history. The students also participated in CART's first annual poster competition, a competition that requires students to develop a poster about a topic or issue pertinent to radiation therapy.
Danielle Smith won first place for her poster, "Image Guided Radiation Therapy" and was awarded $100, while Katie Weiner won second place and $75 for her poster, "Proton Therapy."
Both students will present their posters at the 4th annual SLU Senior Legacy Symposium in April.
In addition to participating in these conference events, the students attended a registry review session to prepare for the national board examination they will take upon graduation in order to become a certified therapist.
"I am so proud of our students," said Sherry Bicklein, radiation therapy clinical coordinator and instructor. "They worked really hard and their dedication certainly paid off. It was one of the most exciting experiences I've had as an instructor."
