The primary goal of a graduate assistantship is to augment the student's educational objectives and to assist in the prompt and successful completion of the student's degree program. The student and the department share a central responsibility in the student's education. Students who are awarded graduate assistantships have special opportunities to receive experience in a profession under the supervision of a faculty mentor.
Although such students serve Saint Louis University with teaching, research, and/or administrative duties, they are considered students, and not employees, of the University, and the tasks assigned to them must be clearly and justifiably consistent with the student's educational and career objectives. Graduate assistants should be given assignments and supervision in such a way that their graduate studies and assistantship responsibilities reinforce one another. The assistant/mentor relationship is vital, and the best assistantship experience will evolve from careful planning and monitoring. In this way, both the students and the University benefit from the relationship.
Please Note: The information provided here applies specifically to University-funded graduate assistantships. Externally-funded assistantships (e.g., through grants or community agencies) may have different requirements and/or terms.
Applying for a Graduate Assistantship
Thank you for your interest in applying for a graduate assistantship in the College of Education and Public Service! Please note: The College is no longer accepting applications for 2013-14 academic year assistantships. (See also, "Additional Opportunities" below.)
The College of Education and Public Service will begin accepting applications for 2014-2015 academic year graduate assistantships in the fall 2013-2014 semester. Students interested in applying for a graduate assistantship for the 2014-2015 academic year may revisit this page in the fall of 2013 to apply via the online application form.
Assistantship Application Deadlines:
- January 15: Application deadline for the Department of Counseling & Family Therapy ONLY
- March 1: Application deadline for all other units in the College (Department of Education, Department of Public Policy Studies, School of Social Work)
All graduate students, including prospective and current graduate assistants, must submit an application each year they wish to be considered for a graduate assistantship appointment or reappointment in CEPS. Students must be fully accepted to a graduate degree program in the College of Education and Public Service (i.e., not a joint or dual degree with another college/school at the University) in order to be awarded an assistantship.
All applications are reviewed by the respective department/school following the application deadlines indicated above. Graduate assistantship appointments will be made by the dean of the College upon the recommendation of the department or school. Following the dean's approval of the departmental recommendation, a contract is prepared and an offer of the assistantship is made to the applicant. In general, offers of graduate assistantships will be extended during the months of March and April, and students should accept/deny their offers no later than April 30.
Qualifications of Graduate Assistants
To qualify for a graduate assistantship, the student should have achieved an excellent academic record and completed substantial coursework in the major field. The student must have been admitted to a graduate program in the College of Education and Public Service as a Classified (i.e., degree-seeking) student, in accordance with the admission policies and procedures of Saint Louis University's Graduate Education; students admitted under any other status will not be considered for University-funded graduate assistantships. The English language proficiencies of international students must be thoroughly evaluated in relationship to the demands of the assistantship assignment prior to the start of the appointment period. All teaching assistants must demonstrate competency in spoken English through procedures established by the controlling department and the college, school or center. Additional criteria may also be required and varies per position.
Conditions of Appointment
Once awarded a graduate assistantship, students are expected to meet the following criteria throughout the duration of their assistantship appointment:
- Attend any mandatory Graduate Assistant Orientation meetings (i.e., generally, a week or two prior to the beginning of the fall semester);
- Maintain a strong academic record;
- Generally speaking, maintain enrollment of 9 credit hours per semester of the assistantship assignment (i.e., fall and spring semesters);
- Must not accept or maintain outside employment or paid positions in addition to the graduate assistantship (i.e., throughout the effective dates of the assistantship contract)
Terms of Appointment
- Work Commitment: Twenty (20) hours per week
- Length of Appointment*:
- Nine-month contracts: mid-August through mid-May
- Eleven-month contracts: July 1 through May 31
*Note: Most graduate assistantships run on nine-month contracts; however, eleven-month appointments are periodically available in some offices or academic units in the College.
- Stipend: Paid monthly through the duration of the contract
- Tuition Award: Nine (9) credit hours per semester of appointment (i.e., fall and spring semesters, each; plus three credit hours in the summer semester for eleven-month appointments)
- Individual Health Insurance: Nine-month coverage or eleven-month coverage (i.e., for nine-month and eleven-month contracts, respectively)
