Monday, April 18, from 4-6 p.m., all SLU students are invited compete in a Earth Week water filtration contest, hosted by Parks College, Engineers Without Borders and the civil engineering department.
Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place teams.

The event will be held in the environmental lab, McDonnell Douglas Hall Room 2156.
Why this is important:
Access to safe water remains an urgent human need in many countries. Over one billion people lack access to safe drinking water that is often grossly contaminated. Tremendous human suffering is caused by diseases that are largely conquered when adequate water supply and sewerage systems are installed. Complicating this situation, half the world population lives on less than $2.50 per day. What the world needs is a simple, inexpensive and effective water treatment.
About the Contest:
Contest Goal: to see which student team can produce the cleanest water from water treatment system constructed from materials that cost less than $2.50. Various materials will be available to teams with associated prices.
How to Form a Team: Each team can include up to four students who will have 30 minutes to design and build the water treatment system.
Guidelines: The water treatment system must process at least one liter of water within five minutes. Each water system can be flushed with up to five gallons of water before the final sample is taken.
Prizes: The team that produces water with the lowest particle content measured by the turbidity wins the grand prize. Other prizes will be available for filter that produces the highest volume of water drinkable water in five minutes and for the most creative filter design.
