The Institutional Residency Review Committee (IRRC) of Saint Louis University School of Medicine was established in January 1983. It was renamed the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) in 1990. The Committee consists of 14 voting members: the Departments of Medicine; Surgery; Psychiatry; Pediatrics; Obstetrics and Gynecology and Family Medicine have one standing member each on the Committee for three year terms; Pathology, Radiology and Anesthesiology have one standing member on the Committee alternating two year terms; Urology, Plastic Surgery, and Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, and Orthopedics have one standing member on the Committee alternating two year terms; Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Dermatology have one standing member on the Committee alternating two year terms. Four residents are selected through the Residents' Association.
Newly appointed clinical department chairpersons serve on the Committee during their initial year in order to become familiar with the Committee's function. The Committee is chaired by the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education. Members ex officio are the Associate Dean for Curricular Affairs, the Medical Director of Saint Louis University Hospital, the Associate Dean for Admissions, Assistant Dean for Student Financial Planning, Housestaff Coordinator, and the Vice President-Medical Affairs (or equivalent) of our major teaching affiliates.
