Lactation Accommodations Policy
Saint Louis University established the Lactation Accommodations Policy to support faculty and staff who choose to breastfeed after returning to work. The policy provides these new mothers with reasonable breaks and private locations for lactation for one year after the birth, in compliance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
Designated Lactation Areas
The University has designated lactation areas on campus to accommodate the needs of faculty and staff who are nursing mothers. Employees may also work with supervisors to find additional space that is clean, private and comfortable, with access to a sink, electrical outlet, chair and table; privacy signage can then be posted.
Employees may request reasonable lactation breaks during the work day: 15–30 minutes, 2–3 times per day, for one year following the birth. Employees may use paid and unpaid break time and/or make up time at the beginning or end of the day.
Storage of Breast Milk
Breast milk must be in clearly labeled, leak-proof containers and may be stored in campus refrigerators if allowed (by law, breast milk cannot be stored with lab specimens, patient foods or medications). Otherwise, employees must provide storage (e.g., cooler).
Employees should notify their supervisor before returning from maternity leave to request lactation accommodations.
